The Giant World Within Us
I needed a break from all the philosophy that’s been posted for the past few days, so…
The human body is pretty fascinating, and today I kindled a flame into the sheer scale packed tightly within us… Here are some amazing numbers:
Our intestines when unraveled are 16 feet long, taller than a double decker bus
With 3.2×10^9 (that is 3200000000) nucleotides, our body has around an entire meter of DNA
There are 28-36 trillion cells in the human body
Around 1 million different colours can be seen by our eyes - with 5 million receptors
The largest sensor on a camera (seemingly from a quick search) is 3200 megapixels and requires temperatures of -100°C to work - meanwhile our eyes are “chilling” at around body temperature (slightly lower) at what is estimated to be 576 megapixels… all within what one square inch (that’s considering the entire eye, not even just the receptors)
The signals from the brain travel down nerves at 250mph - faster than an F1 race car
The list can go on, and I always find these massive numbers within us absolutely jaw-dropping, and feel that anything that sparks an interest is worth delving even slightly deeper into - the more you know the merrier!
